Practical TestPreparation You must pass your Theory Test before applying for this one. Before leaving home, make sure you have the right documents. Without them, your test will not go ahead and you will lose your fee. No exceptions. When you arrive at the Test Centre for your Practical Test you will first have to sign a declaration to confirm your residency status and that the car you have provided, usually your instructor's car, is insured for driving tests. If you intend using your own car, check to make sure it is suitable. You will then lead the way outside where your eyesight will be tested. This will be followed by two Safety Check Questions, which might entail opening the car's bonnet. The driving part of your test lasts approximately 40 minutes. In addition to general driving in a variety of road and traffic conditions, you will need to demonstrate your ability at reversing a car by carrying out one of these manouevres:
You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop. Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to test your ability to drive unsupervised, and make safe decisions without guidance. If you lose your way the examiner will guide you back onto the correct route. If any of the signs are hard to see or obscured, the examiner will direct you until the next sign is visible. To help prepare for this test please see our Books & DVDs page.
